Using the QCA Schemes

The QCA schemes of work have been developed to enable Key Stage 2 children to achieve the learning objectives in each of Key Stage 2 Framework for languages' five strands.

The materials are non-statutory and provide a basis from which schools can adapt, select or substitute ideas and activities as necessary to meet the needs of their children, to fit the time available and to meet the priorities of the school.

They are available in French, German and Spanish and comprise a total of 24 units. Each unit contains six sections plus ideas for an end-of-unit activity and is designed to last approximately half a term.

The schemes of work take the primary curriculum as their starting point with many of the units inspired by themes that are commonly taught in schools. Learning another language presents opportunities for the reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other curriculum areas, and vice versa.

How to use this material

  • You can save the material in My Zone to help you plan your lessons or to support your own professional development.

You can download the language files to your iPod or computer and improve your language skills.

You can print off ‘think pieces’ and use them yourself or in whole school training sessions or for staff development with small groups.
