The Knowledge about Language strand in the Key Stage 2 Framework allows children to develop
their natural curiosity about language and how it works. By
comparing languages, children reach a greater understanding, not
only of the new language, but also of English.
The objectives in the Framework give
children opportunities to reinforce and reinterpret their first
language skills by reflecting on similarities and differences.
Children’s understanding develops when they are given time to
explore and discuss how language works. They will discover patterns
and rules and can be encouraged to experiment with these to make
meaning.
Questions
- Have you taught or observed lessons during which the
children have been encouraged to make use of their knowledge of
English or another language to support their understanding of the
new language?
- How was this knowledge
applied?
- How did it support learning and
progression?
Activity
Read the Knowledge About Language section in the Framework
(pages 78-84). What are the opportunities for linking with the
Primary Framework for Literacy? If you are not the class teacher,
can you talk to colleagues with responsibility for literacy about
developing links between English and the new language?
