Primary languages offers many opportunities
for children to develop an active engagement in their learning.
Children are encouraged to explore the new language collaboratively
through games, songs and rhymes and to show what they have learned
through simple conversations, role-plays and short
performances.
Active learning does not imply that children
need to be running around the classroom every lesson. In listening
to a story or poem children are able to actively engage with the
new language in a safe and familiar environment.
Even children who are not yet ready to join in
orally can connect enthusiastically with their learning and
gradually develop their confidence by observing others and showing
they understand through a physical response.
