Guest Language

An alternative approach to community languages

Steven Gibson, Languages Coordinator, Hyde Park Junior School, Plymouth

Hyde Park Junior School is an inner city school based in the naval city of Plymouth. Initially we decided that French would be the most appropriate language to teach, as it matched both the skills of staff within the school and our proximity to Brittany, France. However, as time went on, it soon became clear that there was a growing number of EAL children already confident in speaking a language other than English. As a result, our approach to teaching primary languages changed.

Although the overall focus is still on French, every sixth week we have a 'guest language'. For one lesson, we invite a parent, child, or expert from outside the school to lead or support a lesson looking at some of the culture and language of their country. Languages are chosen either because they are spoken by children in the school or because they fit with a current topic. For example, our Year 6 Spain topic linked to Spanish featuring as the chosen guest language.

The general theme of each guest language session is guided by the Intercultural Understanding strand in the Key Stage 2 Framework, with common vocabulary such as numbers and basic conversation usually the focus. This helps children make comparisons between the guest language vocabulary and French and English, based on their developing knowledge about language. We have also learnt some great rhymes and festival-based vocabulary.

We have found that parents are often very happy to help with lessons. Local adult education centres have also been happy to support us. Similarly, the 'Language of the Month' software from Newbury Park School (which comes complete with pronunciation and display materials) has been invaluable in supporting the volunteers who have helped keep this program running.

The Guest Language project has been a huge help in consolidating our status as a welcoming school for all nationalities and ethical origins. Children almost look forward to the guest language lessons more than French!
