Marking Progress - introduction & rationale

Marking Progress - a two-day conference for Local Authorities
10 & 11 September 2009, St John's Hotel, Solihull

This was the first time CILT has run a national conference for all England's LA Advisers. 133 Local Authorities were represented.

For the focus of this conference, we chose the theme of Assessment.

Rationale

As the move is made towards primary languages becoming a statutory part of the curriculum, key issues for us as Advisers are:

  • how do we ensure children are progressing effectively in their language learning?
  • How do we assess the quality of teaching without losing teachers’ enthusiasm and goodwill?
  • What does good look like - what should we as Advisers be looking for, and what will Ofsted be looking for?
  • What can Asset as the assessment scheme for the DCSF Languages Ladder bring to primary languages, and how does it compare to other systems such as the Junior European Portfolio, APP, AfL or locally developed assessment schemes?
