Getting to know the Language Upskilling Specification

In June and July 2010 CILT will be running 4 one-day national conferences to support LAs, teacher trainers and HE providers in developing language upskilling courses for primary teachers based on the Language Upskilling Specification published in October 2009.

The events will take place in:

  • Bristol (for the South West)
  • Birmingham (for the West Midlands, the East Midlands, and the East)
  • London (for London and the South East)
  • Manchester (for the North West, North East and Yorkshire & the Humber)

More information including venue details, timings and content of the day will be available shortly after Easter. We would encourage people to attend events in their region in order to establish partnerships between key potential providers.

These conferences are training events designed to give those attending the opportunity to look in detail at the Language Upskilling Specification and to focus on the exemplification materials in French, German and Spanish produced by the writing team at CILT.

At each event attendees will be given a memory stick – the training manual - with all exemplification materials including:

  • Powerpoint presentations to demonstrate teaching and learning activities suitable for adults but adaptable for the primary classroom
  • "Lesson" planning templates to ensure grammatical coverage, progression and differentiation
  • Follow-up materials to work with after the event.

The memory stick will also contain training materials on ensuring coherence between the KS2 Framework and the Language Upskilling Specification and on teaching languages to adults. Some of these will be used on the day and others are designed to be used after the event by regional partnerships.

These events will be free of charge.

Invitations will be sent to LA Advisers, Initial Teacher Training institutions, University Language Centres and other colleagues in HE.

CILT is also offering, free of charge, one day follow-up support per region. The follow up regional events will offer appropriate support – to be negotiated with CILT - to individual regions depending on what is agreed to be most beneficial locally
