A new campaign has been launched with the aim of getting more
people in the UK to learn German. ‘Think German’ will promote
German-themed cultural events and conferences across the country,
as well as provide plenty of resources for German learners at all
levels.
‘Think German’ is being run by the German
Embassy, DAAD, Goethe-Institut London, and UK-German Connection, in
partnership with language organisations like CILT and higher
education departments.
The campaign’s website features a calendar of
events, suggestions of German-themed projects for learners, how to
fund educational trips to Germany and where to find out more
information about the language.
It is thought up to 120 million people speak
German worldwide and it is the language currently most sought after
by British employers, behind French. It is spoken in over 40
countries worldwide and is the official language of Germany,
Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg.
However, CILT’s
2009 Language Trends survey found that has been a decline in
the number of students choosing to study German at GCSE. It is
hoped that this campaign will provide more inspiration to young
people who are considering languages – by introducing them to
elements of the German culture.
