Assessing and Recording

Teacher observation and recording
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. Since formative assessment is now strongly embedded in the primary school, it should provide a framework on which Primary Languages, too, is based, that is, an environment which establishes what children can do and provides feedback on how they can improve. In addition to ongoing regular feedback it is worthwhile undertaking more formal assessments at given intervals so that children can appreciate and celebrate how much they have learned. Through summative assessment of this kind, teachers can evaluate their own teaching as well as taking stock of the level of children's attainments.
Teacher Observation and Recording
Teachers will find the Learning Objectives useful as a point of reference in mapping progression. Lessons can be planned to provide a rich range of experience and interaction with the new language to promote progress but also to allow ample opportunities for assessment for learning and informal teacher assessment. Progress in all strands can be recorded using a portfolio approach and more formal accreditation is available through the National Recognition Scheme.
